As the RR Eye Camp progresses into its second day, Victoria University students and medical professionals have emerged as a critical force behind the delivery of healthcare services to thousands of patients in Bukedea.
The outreach, which is part of a broader philanthropic initiative by the Ruparelia Foundation, has mobilized over 100 health sciences students from Victoria University to work alongside experienced doctors and specialists. Their involvement spans patient screening, clinical support, medication distribution, and participation in surgical procedures under supervision.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga described the initiative as both a humanitarian intervention and a training platform, emphasizing that students are gaining real-world exposure that enhances their competence and readiness for the healthcare sector.
By Day Two, hundreds of surgeries had already been conducted, with dozens completed in a single day as medical teams worked extended hours to handle the surge in patients. The camp is supported by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and over 200 volunteers, highlighting the scale and coordination required to manage such a high-volume medical outreach.
The involvement of institutions such as Mulago National Referral Hospital and C-Care further strengthens the quality of care provided, ensuring that patients receive specialized treatment and that complex cases are properly managed or referred for advanced care.
Beyond treatment, the camp has also facilitated referrals to national health facilities and provided logistical support for patients requiring advanced interventions, reflecting a comprehensive healthcare delivery model that goes beyond immediate care.
